Gamesplanet Review Round Up: Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Travel to Ancient Greece with the open world Action of Assassin's Creed Odyssey which launches October 5th (or 2nd with Gold/Ultimate). Take a look at what critics are saying about the latest entry in the series with our review round up.

The Journey begins.

The Assassin's Creed series has been around for over 10 years and during that time we've fought in Rome, London, Egypt, and more. Later this week fans of the franchise can look forward to exploring the open world of Ancient Greece with the release of Assassin's Creed Odyssey on the horizon. The game is set during the Peloponnesian war between Sparta and Athens as they fight to control the Greek Empire. You'll play as either Alexios or Kassandra as you explore the largest world ever created for an Assassin's Creed title, which is roughly twice the size of last year's Origins. Greece is beautifully recreated with some of the best landscapes ever featured with sweeping vistas and statues depicting the Gods looking down from the mountain tops.

Odyssey also gives players more freedom to explore the world with the brand new "Exploration" mode that offers a change of pace and requires players search out things instead of being given a waypoint (though you can always play Guided for a more traditional AC experience). Choices are also a big factor in the story too, with new dialogue options allowing the story to be shaped by your actions in the world and multiple endings on offer.

Combat has also seen a change as well with new abilities such as the famous Spartan Kick offering new ways to take out foes, and you'll even be able to upgrade them to deal more damage. Players will once again be able to find Gear by exploring the world and progressing into the story, with each piece being upgradable. Naval Battles return and provide more depth than before with upgradable ships, plus Crew that can be recruited - some with Rare abilities. There's also the epic Conquest Battles which will see 2 factions fight in a massive large scale battle for victory, which can offer some great rewards if you're victorious.

Let's dive into the critic scores to see how the Assassin's Creed game is doing among the gaming sites! Open Critic currently lists the game at a Mighty 86 rating, based on 43 scored reviews.
