Age of Empires 4: Dynasties of the East – what do the dynasties of the East have in common?
On November 4th, Age of Empires 4 will be expanded with a new DLC that introduces four new civilisation variants, also inspired by world history. Collectively known as ‘Dynasties of the East’, they open up new game mechanics.
The term ‘East’ in the case of Age of Empires 4: Dynasties of the East, it should be understood in the broadest geographical sense and refers to Asia with a capital A, the continent located east of medieval Latin Europe, the cultural centre of the game.
This is a quick way to distinguish the Eastern and Eurasian dynasties from the more ‘Western’ kingdoms (France, England and their variants, Templars and Lancasters, etc.) already represented in Age of Empires.
One thus speaks of dynasties from East Asia (Japan during the Sengoku period), South Asia (Tughlaq in India), Central Asia and the eastern steppes (Golden Horde, descended from the Mongols) and even the Eastern Roman Byzantine Empire via the Macedonian dynasty (which is Christian, but is considered here to be part of the medieval Orient as opposed to the Latin West).
These variants will bring significant changes to gameplay, units and economy in Dynasties of the East. Each variant will be linked to a base civilisation (e.g. the Tughlaqs originate from the Sultanate of Delhi) and thus share certain similarities, but also introduce radically different mechanics.
Look forward to new resources such as silver (in addition to gold) for the Byzantine-Macedonians, which grants access to new buildings, or governors for Delhi-Tughlaq, which influence production, as well as new units (powerful Varangian mercenaries for the Macedonians, specialised Indian elephants, clan cavalry such as the heavy cavalry of the Takeda or the mobile cavalry of the Mongol steppes, etc.) and alternative play styles (military, defensive, flexible) ...
The aim of Dynasties of the East is to offer a different style of play for the same historical background. The DLC will be packed with details. Be there on November 4th when it's released to see for yourself and apply Sun Tzu's principles of warfare with even more finesse!
