Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Historian Explains the Pirate Setting Behind Black Flag

In a new video, Ubisoft teams up with historian Dr. Rebecca Simon to dive deep into the historical background of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, revealing why Nassau's Pirate Republic serves as the heart of the game's setting. Anyone interested in learning more about the people, places, and realities of piracy should set aside the full 40 minutes.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a full remake of the 2013 action-adventure classic, rebuilt from the ground up by Ubisoft Singapore.

Players once again step into the boots of Edward Kenway, a pirate-assassin who sails the Caribbean of the early 18th century aboard his ship, the Jackdaw. Between naval battles, parkour, stealth missions, and the ongoing conflict between Assassins and Templars, Edward's journey unfolds across one of the most fascinating eras in maritime history.

The PC release is scheduled for July 9, 2026, and pre-orders are already available on Gamesplanet, including a 10% discount and exclusive pre-order bonuses.

What Was the Pirate Republic?

In the video "Life In The Pirate Republic," Ubisoft and historian Dr. Rebecca Simon explore the historical concept that plays a central role in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

The so-called Pirate Republic was not a nation in the modern sense, but rather a de facto lawless territory centered around Nassau on New Providence Island in what is now the Bahamas. Beginning around 1713, more than a thousand pirates gathered there.

The location was strategically ideal. Large naval warships had difficulty accessing the harbor, while smaller and faster pirate vessels could enter with ease. This natural protection helped Nassau become one of the most infamous pirate strongholds of the era.

Historically Grounded, Refreshed for Modern Players

For the game, this means that Nassau is far more than a generic port city. It serves as a living center of lawlessness populated by real historical figures.

Pirate Benjamin Hornigold established a form of order through the Pirate Code and acted as a mentor to none other than Blackbeard. Blackbeard—whose real name was Edward Teach (also spelled Thatch)—was one of the most famous pirates in history. He lived from approximately 1680 to 1718 and was most active during the peak years of his career between 1716 and 1718.

The game's story also incorporates the historical struggle surrounding royal pardons, betrayals, and the gradual dissolution of the Pirate Republic under Governor Woodes Rogers.

One particularly fascinating historical detail concerns the arrival of Woodes Rogers in Nassau in 1718. Upon taking office, he offered pirates a royal pardon. Those who voluntarily surrendered and abandoned piracy would be forgiven for all previous crimes.

Around 200 pirates initially accepted the offer. However, there was a catch: recipients had to promise never to engage in piracy again and, if necessary, betray former comrades. For many pirates, this created a serious moral dilemma.

And of course, once Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launches, we'll all be returning to a life of piracy anyway—at least virtually.
