Baby Steps: Stumbling as an adventure
Baby Steps, a game that combines physics-based gameplay with offbeat humour, will be released on September 23rd. The newly released trailer, ‘Baby Steps features a breast milk slide’, is deliberately bizarre and shows how even simple running can become a ludicrous adventure.
Protagonist without perspective
The focus is on Nate, an unemployed man in his mid-thirties who suddenly finds himself in an open world – for example, as shown here in the video, on a ‘giant breast’. Developer and publisher Devolver Digital is known for going the extra mile. Instead of spectacular moves, you control each step individually, which makes even the smallest movement a challenge.
Falling and failing are an integral part of the game concept. Whether hills, precipices or small steps – every moment can be slapstick. At the same time, the developers emphasise that Baby Steps is intended to be less frustrating than previous Rage games and offers a more meditative gaming experience. However, humour remains the central companion.
The contrast is striking: the game remains mostly silent, with only a few ambient sounds. This gives individual sounds more weight. The game sound thus blends discreetly with the movements. Each step creates a noticeable rhythm. Together with the foggy landscape, this creates an idiosyncratic, slightly bizarre atmosphere.
Baby Steps will be released on September 23rd and will be available on Gamesplanet at launch.
