Beast of Reincarnation - Everything you need to know
Today marks the release of Beast of Reincarnation, the new action RPG from Game Freak, the creators of Pokémon. Here’s everything you need to know and see in our release overview: the best trailers, system requirements, and more.
What is Beast of Reincarnation?
Game Freak is known as the studio behind the Pokémon series—now, for publisher Fictions, the team is venturing into a full-fledged action RPG for the first time, one aimed more at adult players. Beast of Reincarnation is set in Japan in the year 4026: Civilization has long since collapsed, streets and skyscrapers are overgrown, and the land is plagued by robots called Golems as well as infected animals known as Malifax. Responsible for this decay is an all-consuming plague called Blight, which infects both the environment and its inhabitants.
At the heart of the story is Emma, an outsider scarred by the plague itself, who travels across the country with her dog Koo to rid the world of the plague. Director Kota Furushima describes Beast of Reincarnation as a sort of road trip through post-apocalyptic Japan, with the relationship between Emma and Koo taking center stage. Along the way, the two hunt not only minor enemies but also massive boss monsters.

Dog Seeks a Loving Home
Unlike what you might expect from a big action RPG, Beast of Reincarnation isn’t an open-world game. Instead, you travel through several semi-open regions, switching between them using a mobile base called the Cleanse Walker. There, you upgrade your weapons, take care of your companions, and can even give Koo a bath when he’s gotten dirty again on your adventures.
In terms of combat, the game combines true real-time action with turn-based elements. As Emma, you perform sword attacks, block, and parry in real time—similar to FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, an additional bar fills up beneath enemies’ health bars, unlocking a deadly finisher after enough successful parries. In the heat of battle, you can pause time to give Koo commands. This is where the “turn-based” aspect of Beast of Reincarnation comes into play. Koo has a growing, upgradeable list of attacks with different elemental affinities, to which enemies are more or less vulnerable. After selecting a command, you must also complete a quick-time event for the attack to take full effect.

To get around, Emma uses unusual abilities that spring from her hair—more specifically, from roots that she can control through her hair. Sounds strange? It is. This lets her glide after jumps, pull herself toward specific points, or cross large chasms. These abilities also come into play during combat. Along the way, you’ll repeatedly come across camps where you can rest, improve Emma and Koo’s three core stats—Strength, Vitality, and Radiance—and unlock new abilities in the skill tree—some of which require a specific value in one of the three attributes.
