What is Company of Heroes 3

The groundhog says hello every day: It's World War II again - and you'll be there live, in real time, but also as a turn-based tactician, because Company of Heroes 3 also offers turn-based manoeuvres like in Total War: Warhammer. The Company of Heroes franchise had its debut back in 2006, with great success, but a second part was still a long time coming until 2012. Developer Relic takes a lot of time to ensure that each CoH is truly unique and ready for action. Now the third part is finally here and first review scroees make it clear that it was definitely worth the wait.

Company of Heroes 3 plays out its great strengths in multiplayer mode, but of course there are also varied campaign missions for single combatants. For example, you can fight for the German Afrika Korps against the British or you can start in the Italian campaign in the south of the country and work your way through the map mission by mission - turn-based, almost like in a Total War game. The battles of some missions can be automated, but not the important ones.

Company of Heroes 3 will not glorify war excessively. On the contrary: if you are on the move in Africa, for example, there are always glimpses of the life and suffering of the inhabitants of other countries. But of course, when you overrun enemy positions with your troops and flatten enemies, that should also be fun - Company of Heroes 3 largely refrains from pointing the finger and leaves it up to the players to judge for themselves.

Don't expect mega battles with hundreds of units in Company of Heroes 3 (which in turn benefits the system requirements. As a rule, skirmishes escalate between smaller squads, in which your strategic skills are all the more in demand, because after all, every unit counts. Such conflicts are all the more beautifully staged for it. Conquer territories, hold them, collect the corresponding bonuses and make sure that your units want for nothing. Only satisfied soldiers will be good soldiers. In Company of Heroes 3, you don't just waste units by the dozen - every man counts here.

Four factions go to war for you in CoH3: the German Wehrmacht, the Afrika Korps, the British and US units, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. This is an added value for the multiplayer modes, because the weaknesses of one faction can be compensated for with the strengths of another, as long as the interaction is well coordinated. Play Company of Heroes 3 online with or against each other, featuring 14 different maps at release. CoH3 also offers mod support, lets you play private online matches and from 1-against-1 to 4-against-4, there are several MP variants in co-op and competitive mode right from the start.

Company of Heroes 3 - Critic Review Round up

Company of Heroes 3 currently sits at a Mighty 82 rating over on OpenCritic with 92% of the critics favouring this latest entry in the popular strategy series.

EuroGamer's Chris Tapsell praises the scope of the game and the level of detail on offer "Navigating a tonal minefield with just enough confidence, Company of Heroes 3 is a big, refined, and beautifully textured addition to an already brilliant series." Ending the review with a Recommended. Meanwhile at GamesBeat's Dean Takahashi also enjoyed the game immensely, giving a particular shout-out to the single player portion of the game - being both large scale and epic in most encounters, though AI can tend to be a mixed bag at times. They rated it with a 4.5 / 5 stars, "I’m joyful that this kind of big-budget RTS is still possible in our age of blockbusters. I hope the game does well and proves that RTS and WWII are still economically viable categories in gaming."

It seems that SEGA have delivered a faithful experience for fans of the series, and those looking to jump back into it or try it for the first time should feel at home in the latest Company of Heroes.

Company of Heroes 3 PC launch times

Publisher SEGA will release Company of Heroes 3 on February 23rd 2023. An exact release date is not yet known. Rumour has it that there will be a preload phase shortly before release after all - but there has been no official statement on this yet.
