Echoes of Aincrad: Story Trailer Reveals the Dark Beginnings of Aincrad

Bandai Namco has released the story trailer for Echoes of Aincrad and, in doing so, has coined a new genre: “Full-Dive VRMMORPG.” But take note: it is not a VR game.

Echoes of Aincrad is set in the universe of Sword Art Online and throws you into the floating castle of Aincrad. Bandai Namco describes the game as the “world's first full-dive VRMMORPG,” from which there is no easy way to log out. It is not a VR title, even though the term VRMMORPG might suggest otherwise. Rather, the point is that the game's protagonists are actually traveling through a digital world. But: If you die in the game, you die in reality. No respawn, no second life.

This action RPG from developer Game Studio Inc. features a fully customizable character: You design your avatar from scratch and choose gear, weapons, and special skills to match your playstyle—whether it’s fast-paced, tactical, or endurance-based. There’s also a partnership system that enables real synergy between you and a companion. Explore various cities, open areas, and dangerous dungeons as the game world of Echoes of Aincrad continues to expand with each step forward in the story.

The story trailer also shows how the first groups of surviving players form, how beta testers become a valuable resource with their prior knowledge, and what dangers lurk on the various levels of Aincrad.
