Echoes of Aincrad: Trailer Explains the Merciless “Death Game” Mode

Echoes of Aincrad for the true hardcore gamers! A trailer released by Bandai Namco explains the optional Death Game mode: One save slot, one life—if your hero dies, the journey is over.

Permadeath for Aincrad Veterans

Shortly before the PC release on July 10, 2026, Bandai Namco is following up with a new trailer for Echoes of Aincrad. This time, the focus is on Death Game mode, an optional hardcore mode that really amps up the action in this RPG set in the Sword Art Online universe. The rule is simple yet brutal: If your custom-created hero dies, your entire save file is deleted. No reloading, no second chances. If you die in the world of Sword Art Online, you die in “real life” too.

Despite its strictness, however, the mode remains fair. Your progress is only reset if your character falls in battle—because then, after all, you’ve brought your defeat upon yourself. Every battle, every weapon choice, and every decision for or against your partner character thus carries real weight. The Death Game mode is normally unlocked only after completing the main story of Echoes of Aincrad. But if you don’t want to wait, you can get immediate access through the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition to gain immediate access and start taking your chances right at launch.

Pre-order Bonus and Editions

Anyone who pre-orders Echoes of Aincrad will receive the Proto-Eluzidator Series Weapon Pack—a set of six weapon types plus a shield, complete with blueprints, inspired by the prototype of the Black Swordsman’s favorite blade—regardless of which edition they choose on Gamesplanet. A nice bonus to help you get started.

The Echoes of Aincrad Deluxe Edition includes the Starter Pack, the expansion DLC (scheduled through the end of 2026), and early access to Death Match mode—where a single death wipes your progress—in addition to the main game.

The Echoes of Aincrad Ultimate Edition takes it up a notch: In addition to the Deluxe Edition features, you’ll receive the “Unanswered//butterfly” bonus content app with exclusive artwork, soundtrack, and additional content, as well as the armor pack featuring Fluttering Robes and Fluttering Boots. Content that isn’t otherwise available in the main game. Especially cool: The full-length promotional animated film “Unanswered//butterfly” is included, which tells a story separate from the main narrative that runs for approximately 120 minutes.
