Gothic 1 Remake - Making of Video #3 explains why the baroque style is formative

A classic returns - with modern graphics and a familiar atmosphere. In the third part of the making-of series, the developers from Alkimia Interactive provide exciting insights into the graphic redesign of the classic role-playing game.

Between retro feeling and modern technology

This time, the Gothic 1 making-of video focuses on the art style of the remake. The challenge: to completely rebuild the Minental - with modern technology, but without losing the raw charm of the original. In the video, the developers show just how much flair is required for this using concrete implementations and graphical comparisons.

Baroque as a source of inspiration for a Gothic 1 remake is a little surprising, but seems to fit. Quote: “We used the baroque style as the basis for the use of light, color, darkness and the aesthetics of the baroque in all its phases and eras.” With this statement, the team makes it clear that it is not just about making the Minental prettier, but about a conscious redesign that is artistically based on classical models.

A look behind the scenes: Is the remake still close to the original?

In the video, the developers show how they want to master the balancing act between modern technology and the unmistakable atmosphere of the original. It becomes clear that the team is not simply recreating old locations from the 2001 Gothic original, but is reinterpreting the Minental with a great deal of flair. Stylistically modern, but with a clear reference to what once characterized Gothic.
