Gamescom: Suprising Reboot with a Trailer of The Lords of the Fallen

I admit - that came as a surprise. At Gamescom 2022, publisher CI Games announced a reboot of Lords of the Fallen. But it's more than just a pretty reboot of a popular Soulslike. Much more... and it has THE in the title now!

Lords of the Fallen, completed in 2014 by Hamburg-based developer Deck13, is considered one of the best Soulslikes alongside the The Surge series. It doesn't come close to the complexity of a Dark Souls, but the graphics, setting, atmosphere and the challenging melee action were entirely suitable for a viable alternative. Rumours were long present about a possible successor. That never came to be, instead, a completely new The Lords of the Fallen will be released in 2023 by another development studio. An extended reboot that will also be the sequel to Lords of the Fallen. The CGI trailer from the Gamescom opening show is interesting to watch.

Spectacular, isn't it? Of course! It only shows pre-rendered scenes and no real gameplay but in terms of quality, you can already guess that publisher CI Games is putting a lot of money into the development. With all certainty CI game studio HexWorks, which was only founded in 2020, doesn't have any incompetent paint graphic artists in the development team. It also shows that their intention is not only to rebuild the game but also expand it.

The character and monster design, the music, the successful depiction of a fantasy world: In the first trailer for The Lords of the Fallen, everything fits together nicely. The HexWorks studio is currently creating a promising fantasy Souls-like game and we can hardly wait to see the first gameplay trailer. But what is it about anyway? Why is it more than just a reboot?

The Lords of the Fallen: not a remaster, not a remake and much more than a reboot

The world of The Lords of the Fallen will hardly be comparable to that of its predecessor. Not only does it look completely different, it is also much more expansive in the new action role-playing game, five times as large, but probably still similarly interconnected. All of this is divided into two larger areas, the world of the living and the world of the dead. Also new: In The Lords of the Fallen you can play the entire action adventure in online co-op mode. It probably won't save you from dying a lot but now you'll at least have a companion.

You slip into the boots of one of nine different characters. It's nice that the choice of classes is apparently somewhat closer to that of Dark Souls. And then you will have to fight the dark demon god Adyr again. He has been defeated before, but eons later he is back on the doorstep causing trouble. In the worlds of The Lords of the Fallen you fight small and large enemies, imposing bosses of course, collect items and improve weapons, armour and even spells. Sounds like The Lords of the Fallen will be much more complex than its predecessor.
