Marathon is live: 4 new trailers released at launch – reviews still pending

Marathon by Bungie is now playable. To celebrate the launch, the studio released four new trailers — including a message from Gus Moraine of NuCaloric.

After a turbulent development history — the original release date in September 2025, alpha feedback, a delay, and a Server Slam — the time has finally come: Marathon is here and aims to shake up the extraction shooter genre. Bungie celebrates the release with four new clips, most notably a message from Gus Moraine of the local energy corporation NuCaloric. The community and alpha testers significantly shaped Bungie’s new shooter, the studio emphasizes, and now Season 1 has begun while game reviewers around the world are racing to deliver the first reviews.

You can watch all four trailers here:

What exactly is behind Marathon?

Marathon is a PvPvE first-person extraction shooter in which you play as so-called Runners — biocybernetic mercenaries — scavenging for loot on the contaminated colony planet Tau Ceti IV. Solo or in a three-person squad, you infiltrate abandoned research facilities, spaceship wrecks, and outposts, collect weapons, gear, and upgrades, and must ultimately reach extraction alive — otherwise everything except your player experience is lost. Opposing you are both other player teams and AI-controlled UESC security forces. Six playable Runner classes (called Shells), each with different strengths, can be tailored to your preferred playstyle through implants, weapon mods, and core upgrades. The creators of Destiny describe their visual style as “Graphic Realism,” a mix of vibrant colors and dark sci-fi aesthetics that visually sets Marathon apart from its competitors.

The game is not a sequel or remake of Bungie’s Marathon trilogy from the 1990s, but rather a standalone reinterpretation of the universe. Cross-play and cross-save are available from the start.

You can grab your Marathon Steam key directly from Gamesplanet — currently with a 10% discount compared to the regular price. Available as a Standard Edition and a Deluxe Edition. The only question is: how long will you survive your first run on Tau Ceti IV?
