The future of Marathon: Bungie unveils roadmap up to March 2027 – a comeback featuring a new PvE area and Robo-Samurai

Marathon is set to enter its next phase with a long-term update roadmap: following the Nightfall refresh in October, the Symbiosis expansion will follow in December, featuring a PvE mode, a new Shell and a larger Perimeter area.

Just over a year after its launch, Bungie is pulling the plug on the extraction shooter Marathon – at least as far as communication is concerned. Studio representatives Del Chafe III and Julia Nardin have published a detailed blog post, complete with a ‘Dev Insights’ video, outlining the direction the PvEvP game is set to take until March 2027. The reason for this sweeping announcement: mixed feedback from the community, which had been calling for greater clarity on the future of Marathon.

The schedule: October, December, March

The transformation kicks off in October with the ‘Nightfall Refresh’, which revamps progression, rewards and the live experience. Things get really interesting in December with the Symbiosis expansion: it introduces Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode, an experimental PvP team deathmatch with a lower commitment level, and a revamped area called Perimeter featuring a new fungal ecosystem, fresh paths and a boss battle against the ‘Tick Queen’. Joining the mix is Bishop, a new Shell – a robo-samurai designed for close combat and speed. The onboarding process will also be streamlined, supplemented by a social hub featuring a shooting range.

Major Evolution in March 2027

In March 2027, all these building blocks are set to merge into an integrated system of PvE, PvP and PvEvP in Marathon. Also planned are a revamped Cradle progression system, more story content, new alien enemies – potentially including modified Pfhor – and a completely new zone on Tau Ceti IV. Bungie emphasises that there will no longer be fixed seasons in future; updates will be released as and when they are ready.
