First Gameplay Trailer for METRO 2039 Revealed at Xbox Games Showcase 2026

Following its announcement earlier this spring, METRO 2039 resurfaced during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 with its very first gameplay trailer. 4A Games finally showcased footage captured directly in-game, delivering a fully post-apocalyptic glimpse of what's to come.

A bit of chronology first: METRO 2039 takes place several years after the events of Metro Exodus. The game brings players back to the heart of the Moscow Metro, where the survivors of the nuclear apocalypse now live under the rule of the Novoreich.

The story follows a new protagonist known as "the Stranger", who is forced to return to the depths of the metro due to recurring nightmares. Standing in his way is Hunter, a former Spartan who has become the leader of this authoritarian regime and embraces imagery that could politely be described as "reminiscent of a dark period in history."

The trailer shown during the Xbox Games Showcase contains nearly three minutes of gameplay footage captured entirely in-game. While the political themes appear to be a major focus of this new installment, the series' signature atmosphere is immediately recognizable: oppressive tunnels, tense encounters with enemies of questionable humanity, and glimpses of the irradiated ruins of Moscow.

During the Xbox Games Showcase, Deep Silver and 4A Games also confirmed a PC release planned for February 2027. Metro 2039 will be available on Gamesplanet as soon as the publisher gives the green light.
