Resident Evil 9 Requiem revealed - Summer Game Fest
Capcom has struck hard at Summer Game Fest 2025 with the official unveiling of Resident Evil 9: Requiem, an episode already heralded as a major turning point for the survival-horror saga.
The ninth main instalment in the series has a release date: 27th February 2026. It also has a setting. It will take us back to where it all began, the notorious Raccoon City.
Since its beginnings in the last century, Resident Evil has imposed its own codes: oppressive exploration, resource management, monsters galore, all set against a backdrop of biological disasters. After exploring new horizons and renewing its gameplay with first-person shooters (Resident Evil 7, Village) and well-received remakes, the series returns to one of its most symbolic locations.
In Requiem, players take on the role of newcomer Grace Ashcroft, a bumbling FBI analyst and daughter of journalist Alyssa Ashcroft (seen in Resident Evil Outbreak). She is sent to Raccoon City to investigate strange deaths, but will also have to face the ghosts of her past and unravel the mystery of her mother's death.
Using the RE Engine, Resident Evil 9: Requiem is presented by Capcom as a ‘new era of survival-horror’, with a focus on striking realism: ultra-detailed facial expressions, skin textures and sweat droplets are highlighted to reinforce immersion. The reflection of the text on Grace's glasses is another striking example.
Why return to Raccoon City, razed to the ground at the end of RE3? Where do the old heroes fit in with this new protagonist? Will Capcom opt for third-person or first-person shooters, or offer a choice between the two? We'll be sure to keep you posted.
With Resident Evil 9: Requiem, Capcom intends to mark the 30th anniversary of the franchise in 2026. Next up is Gamescom in August, where you can see the first playable version in action.
