Maximum horror: VR mods that turn Resident Evil Village and RE7 into a killer experience

The VR modding community is becoming increasingly active. After Red Dead Redemption 2 and Elden Ring, particularly successful PC VR mods for Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 7 are available in a few days.

UploadVR describes the VR mod for Resident Evil Village as the "best VR fan mod to date". Resourceful VR fans have already caused a stir with their mods for GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and MechWarrior 5. After all, with a VR headset you're not just looking at a flat screen, you're right in the middle of the action in virtual reality, i.e. at the controls of a gigantic Battlemech or on a horse in RDR2. Sitting at a table with the Bakers in Resident Evil 7 - you can make this horror come true and let it wash over you. If you can stand it.

You don't even need the super-expensive VR headsets from Valve, Pimax or HP. A cheap Quest 2 will do the trick with a PC connection (wireless or wired). Besides a reasonably powerful PC and the VR headset, you logically only need the respective games and the VR mods from the community. Some of them cost a small amount in the form of a Patreon contribution (such as the mods by Luke Ross). Tip: Never use VR mods in online modes on public servers. Anti-cheat mechanisms might take offence.

The well-known modder Praydog has already made a name for himself with VR mods for Resident Evil 2 and RE3 - a VR mod for Resident Evil 8 (Village) should also be available in a few days, complete with 6DOF VR support, motion control, i.e. captured hand movements, motion control and not just pad control. Often it is enough to simply replace a few files in the installation folders (make backups and always check all downloaded files for viruses anyway). Occasionally you will have to patch, because the community continues to work on VR mods. In all cases, the end result is better than Capcom's official VR implementations for Playstation VR. We wish that Capcom would also offer VR support for the PC versions in the future.

Once you have everything set up correctly, the experience is simply breathtaking. For example, in Resident Evil Village, you deflect attacks with hand movements, aim realistically with your hands, and actually pull items out of the inventory with your hands. The scale is also much better in a VR environment. Imagine standing in person in front of the giant Lady Dimitrescu - you won't soon forget it. It's also better to wear nappies, because encounters with monsters can be really stressful.

However, VR implementations through mods are never 100% perfect. For best results though games would have to be developed from the ground up for VR, which is unfortunately rarely the case. Thus, cutscenes in VR often look a bit weird. But the fan mods are close to a perfect experience and one is happy to overlook the odd glitch, because the VR feeling is quite overwhelming. Imagine standing in the middle of a rain of stars at night in Elden Ring. (Or whatever it is that flies through the air, sparkling golden yellow. Pollen?)

For VR users who want to be regularly informed about new VR mods, we recommend from our own experience to take a look at the Discord server Flatscreen to VR Modding Community. There, the VR community regularly exchanges information and presents new projects.
