Game Awards 2025: Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis officially unveiled with first trailers
Lara Croft is back! Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis were unveiled at The Game Awards 2025, with trailers for both games shown for the first time.
The Game Awards 2025 had some real highlights in store for you: two new Tomb Raider projects were officially confirmed, both with trailers, but only one of them showed initial gameplay scenes. This marks the beginning of a new phase for the Tomb Raider franchise, in which both fresh impetus (i.e., contemporary graphics and modern gameplay) and nostalgia play a central role.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst – a new chapter for Lara Croft
Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been in development at Crystal Dynamics since 2022 and takes Lara to a vast area in northern India. The story begins after a mystical event that has unleashed ancient powers. As rival treasure hunters from around the world flock to the region, Lara tries to find out what is behind the mysterious events – and whose goals they really threaten.
The first trailer for Catalyst already makes it clear that you can expect one of the largest game worlds in the series to date. Based on Unreal Engine 5, Catalyst features an open landscape full of hidden locations, complex burial chambers, and challenging puzzles. The developers promise that Lara's exploration equipment will be more customizable than ever before. The adventure is also set to draw you in more narratively, with trust and betrayal playing a central role. The release is planned for 2027.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis – Back to basics, but in style
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis marks a return to the series' roots. The game is a modern reinterpretation of the 1996 classic, making it a true remake, and also uses Unreal Engine 5 to completely rebuild Lara's first adventure. You'll travel once again through iconic locations such as Peru, Greece, and Egypt, encounter dangerous creatures, and use your acrobatic skills to overcome ancient mechanisms.
The central goal remains the search for the fragments of the Scion artifact. You can expect many new features, not only visually but also in terms of gameplay. The new edition of Tomb Raider is intended to feel familiar, but surprise with new ideas – a balancing act that should appeal to both long-time fans and new players. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release in 2026, ahead of Catalyst.
