In Civilization VI you change civilisations twice during the course of a game, e.g. you start with Egypt, later control the Mongols and finally the kingdom of Buganda. However, your ruler remains the same throughout and is independent of the chosen civilisation. The game is divided into three chapters: Antiquity, Age of Discoveries and Modernity, with each era having its own focal points, milestones and technology trees. The chapter change takes place after all milestones have been reached or after a set number of rounds. Cities are now divided into urban and rural hexes instead of districts.

Eight years after Civilization VI, Firaxis presents Civilization VII with a new art style. The graphics remain colourful, but less cartoon-like. Finer details and greater polygon depth are recognisable.
