The Future of Starfield: Free Lanes Update and Terran Armada Story DLC Announced

Bethesda has announced both the largest free update to date and a new story DLC for Starfield. The new content will be available on April 7th 2026.

With “Free Lanes” and “Terran Armada,” two substantial content packs for Starfield are in the starting blocks. Bethesda broke down the new content for viewers in a detailed dev video featuring Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb, Art Director Istvan Pely, and Design Director Emil Pagliarulo. Since launch, Starfield has already received more than a dozen updates—bug fixes, performance improvements, new content like the REV-8 land vehicle and the Shattered Space DLC, as well as over 1,000 player-created items. But the community is craving more. April 7 is set to become the most significant post-release day in the game’s development history to date.

Free Lanes: The Biggest Free Update Ever (for Starfield)

The “Free Lanes” free update packs a lot into a single update and is likely to appeal most to those who have been hoping for more freedom in space travel since Starfield's launch. The centerpiece is the new travel mode: Instead of jumping from A to B via fast travel, you’ll now be able to fly freely between planets within a star system. While on board your ship, you’ll have full access to all workbenches, can talk to crew members, or customize your ship. The autopilot automatically slows down when you reach your destination. Along the way, new locations and encounters appear dynamically, some of which will even pull you out of relaxed travel mode without warning.

If you want to max out your space gear, X-Tech is a new resource you can collect through combat, exploration, and boss drops. You can use it to reroll legendary effects on weapons or—after a maximum of five attempts—select them directly. The update also introduces a new effect tier (Tier 4) for weapons and gear, including modifiers like “Saboteur” (robots explode instantly), ‘Reckless’ (one shot, 500% damage, half HP), or “Enigmatic” (creates holograms of you in combat). Also included are a ship optimization terminal for your Frontier, a shared storage container for all outposts, a new land vehicle called the Moonhopper for steep terrain, and the Anchorpoint star station with merchants and new quests. For collectors, there are 27 Colony War action figures, each granting different buffs. And for those with enough credits to spare: a luxurious asteroid base beckons in the asteroid field as a new home.

In New Game+, you’ll no longer have to start over with empty pockets—the quantum entanglement device lets you carry your favorite gear over to the next playthrough.

Terran Armada: Story DLC Coming—But Not Necessarily “Free”

The paid DLC “Terran Armada” for Starfield will be released on April 7. The Terran Armada describes itself as the “true” children of Earth—a highly advanced military power, consisting largely of robotic soldiers, whose ranks also include missing veterans of the Colonial War. Their motives remain deliberately unclear at the outset, but the outcome of the conflict is expected to have significant consequences for the entire Settled Systems.

The new Starfield quest series is accompanied by Delta, a reprogrammed Armada robot who, according to designer Pagliarulo, is “neither evil nor good”—exactly the kind of companion that fits well with a crew that appreciates moral gray areas. The heart of the DLC is the Terran Attacks: repeatable events that can pop up almost anywhere in the Settled Systems. On the star map, you can see where battles are taking place and decide for yourself whether to intervene. However, Terran technology sometimes blocks the grav-jump, so you’ll have to fight your way through first. Encounters range from minor skirmishes to large-scale infiltration missions on Terran ships. You can adjust the frequency of these non-story-driven attacks in the game options.

In addition, there are exclusive “NASA Tactical”-style ship modules and blueprints, new spacesuits and weapons with a less sci-fi aesthetic (“Less science fiction, more down-to-earth,” says Art Director Istvan Pely), a cute ModelG mini-bot as a customizable elite crew member, and a fully decorated cabin module that you can place directly on a planet of your choice.

Starfield - Free Lanes and Terran Armada will be released on April 7th 2026. The Terran Armada DLC will also be available separately on Gamesplanet. Lucky are those who own the Premium Edition of Starfield or the Premium Upgrade: This will unlock Terran Armada on release day at no additional cost.
