Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Konami sends the launch trailer ahead
The PS1 originals Suikoden 1 and 2 are among the pioneers of JRPGs. Only now is Konami sending new HD remasters into the race. Can the double pack still inspire with its story today? Initial tests say ‘Yes!’.
If there is a gap of almost 30 years between an original and a remaster version, then a developer studio has missed out on opportunities for a long time. Both PlayStation originals, Suikoden 1 and 2, are celebrated veterans of the JRPG genre and have often been mentioned in the same breath as Final Fantasy VII, which was also very successful at the time. Both games achieved an average score of 82% on the rating platforms - in other words, top league.
Now the double pack with the unwieldy title Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is in the starting blocks for a release on March 6th 2025. The colourful presentation of Suikoden belies the serious subject matter and storyline of the game. In the first part, you play the young son of a high-ranking general of the Scarlet Moon Empire and realise that the country is riddled with corruption. After the first dramatic events, you escape your post, gather 108 companions around you and join the resistance against a tyrannical regime.
The conflict between states continues to smoulder in the second part, with the kingdom of Highland instigating a brutal war against Jowston. The two friends Riou and Jowy rise through the ranks of both parties to the conflict, putting their friendly alliance to the test. The recently released launch trailer, which you can watch here, also tells the story. Oh, those old-school pixel graphics!
