11 bit studios has released the first gameplay trailer for The Alters: Last Variable, the upcoming expansion for the award-winning sci-fi adventure, which is arriving next week on July 13th. Dive right into the footage to see what awaits in this new DLC:
What is Last Variable about?
Instead of an escape, this time the story focuses on staying: Jan the scientist decides against leaving the planet and awakens from cryosleep years later to finally solve the mystery of the so-called Oasis. To make this happen, he once again draws on the core mechanics of The Alters and clones himself—this time, however, exclusively into variants with specialized scientific fields. A geologist, biologist, chemist, and physicist come together to form a research team that scrutinizes every corner of the planet.
Terraforming, Base Building, and Once Again, the Ticking Clock
Last Variable playfully amps up the familiar survival elements from The Alters: You terraform barren sections of the planet into habitable zones, mine exotic resources, and unlock new research tiers. Here’s the catch: the planet fights back with earthquakes, radiation spikes, and the inexorable march of time. Field labs offer your Alters protection during expeditions, but without cryosleep, they continue to age inexorably. New modules, such as the cryosleep chamber, are designed to help you keep track of the long-term consequences of your decisions—while buying yourself some time.
In terms of storytelling, The Alters stays true to itself: differing worldviews within the crew create friction, and Jan must decide whether his team will fall apart over their differences or make scientific history together. The main game has already won a DICE Award in the Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year category for its storytelling and was also nominated for a BAFTA for Best Narrative—so expectations for the DLC are likely to be correspondingly high.
The Alters: Last Variable launches on July 13 for PC and will be available on Gamesplanet upon release. By the way: We’re currently offering the Standard Edition of the main game at a 60% discount for a limited time. If you purchase the Deluxe Edition, you’ll save 49%—it already includes the Last Variable DLC. You can upgrade from the Standard Edition to the Deluxe Edition using the Deluxe Edition Upgrade.
