Beast of Reincarnation: A Detailed Look at the Unique Combat System

Game Freak's Beast of Reincarnation needs a combat overview trailer to properly showcase its blend of real-time action and “turn-based tactics.” So let's go and check out the gameplay overview video ahead of the PC Release on August 4th.

Beast of Reincarnation, developed by Game Freak and published by Fictions, is once again getting plenty of attention for its unusual combat system: A combat trailer takes a closer look at the action RPG’s combat system. To do this, the developers have literally gone to great lengths.

Two Characters, One Combat System

You control the protagonist, Emma, and her faithful companion, Koo (or Kuu). While Emma fights with her sword, you issue commands to Koo during slow-motion sequences to perform special techniques, much like in a turn-based RPG. Parrying plays a central role: Timing your blocks correctly fills the FP bar, which you use to unleash powerful “Bloom Arts” through your sidekick Koo. Enemies have not only an energy bar but also a “Down” bar; filling this bar enables final finishers. Bloom Arts hits fill this bar particularly quickly.

The tactical depth is particularly evident when facing massive boss enemies: Time slows down while you select your special attacks, allowing you to read your opponents’ movements and react accordingly. In addition, an extensive skill tree lets you unlock new abilities for Emma and shape your own playstyle.
