Troubleshooting - Fixing Common Crashes/Graphic Settings/Black Screens and more
Here are the solutions that will allow you to solve the crashes, black screens and improve the graphics of the game.
Before going on to the following tips, think about checking the integrity of the Steam cache: Go to your game library, right click on Mafia 3 and click on "Properties". Go to the "Local Files" tab and click "Check Cache Integrity"
Black screen at launch of Mafia III
- Launch the game launcher via Steam, unplug all USB devices except the Keyboard (Mouse, Xbox Controller, Headset, Hub, ...)
- Click on "Enter".
- Once the game is launched, reconnect your devices
Switch to 60 FPS on Mafia III
The 1.01 patch has allowed players to play in 60 FPS or higher by adjusting the settings in the game options. This will prevent the image from jerking.
You can choose between 30/60 FPS or without a cap at all
Stutter/Freezing in the game
Limit the FPS to 30 FPS in the game interface to stabilize your image. (See above)
Mafia III Crash at Launch
Check that you have the latest Graphics Drivers Available Nvidia or AMD
Reinstall Visual C ++ on your PC https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145
Launch the game in windowed mode via the console of Steam:
- Right-click the game from the Steam Library and select Properties.
- On the General tab select "Set launch options ...."
- Enter "-windowed" without quotation marks and click OK.
- Close the Game Properties window and launch the game.
Blurry Image in Mafia III
- Disable motion blur in the game options
- Adjust the AA Option in the game or via the Nvidia/AMD Control Panels.
- Deactivate Depth Fields in the game options

Mafia III Doesn't Launch
- Disable your Anti-Virus before launching the game
- Perform the latest Windows 10 update (if using Windows 10)
- Try running the game in administrator mode from the file installation folder
- Uninstall Microsoft Visual C ++ 2015 then reinstall Visual C ++ 2015 from the microsft site and restart your pc. Try to install it with a minimal startup: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Try launching the game in windowed mode through the Steam console (see above in the "Crash at launch" section)
The api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll file is missing
- Go to the Windows Update site and download the missing updates.
- You can also try downloading the .dl from a reliable .dll site, for example https://www.dll-files.com/api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll.html
Mafia III Download Stuck at 99%
- Close Steam
- Go to the Steam -> Steamapps -> Depotcache folder and delete the contents of the folder
- Then restart Steam and finish the download. Consider checking the integrity of the Steam file cache for security.
Error message "The CreateDXGIFactory2 procedure entry point can not be found in the C: \ WINDOWS \ SYSTEM32 \ d3d11.dll dynamic link library."
- Uninstall the game then go to SteamApps => Common => Mafia III
- Delete ALL Mafia III files
- Reinstall the game
How to change the game language
- From the game map, go into the options
- then click on "Game" (the image with a mixer)
- then select the menu to reset the game language and confirm your choice
