Largest Gameboy ever sets a new Guinness World Record!

The world's largest Gameboy sets a new Guinness World Record at 101 cm long, 62cm wide, and 20cm, with it being created by student and software developer Ilhan Ünal.

Over the years we've had a number of handheld consoles, but there was one that set the bar for all handhelds when the Nintendo Gameboy released all the way back in 1990 (1989 for Japan and North America). The little guy wasn't much of a looker, with it being chunky and requiring the use of 4 AAA batteries to power it. Worst of all it didn't even feature a backlight, something that we take for granted these days (though you could get the light addon to clip onto it). It did however feature a killer lineup of great titles like Super Mario Land, Metroid II and the biggest hit was the brick breaking Tetris.

Recently the Brussels-based gamer / student and software developer Ilhan Ünal recreated the classic handheld in XXL size. Not only has he managed to bring to life the original style of the Gameboy, but it's fully functional with it being powered by a Raspberry Pi (although giant buttons may be a little awkward to use). It can even play games using classic carts for the handheld. Measuring at a whopping 1.01 m tall, 0.62 m wide and 0.2 metres deep, this has set a new record for the world's largest Gameboy.

Ilhan Ünal had this to say on the project:

"The Game Boy was a huge part of many people's childhoods, including my own. I was obsessed with my Game Boy as a kid, so I wanted to create something that would put a smile on little Ilhan's face, and hopefully on the face of anyone who is a big kid at heart"

The entire project was quite the challenge and took a month to complete, with him dividing his time between studies and coursework. He had to borrow the school labs to cut his masterpiece into shape, which required 3 cutting machines to finish and made things much easier.

What handheld would you like to see get super sized?
