A new adventure for Amaterasu: Okami sequel officially announced at The Game Awards!
At the Game Awards 2024, an unexpected announcement caused a stir in the gaming community: a sequel to the cult classic Okami is in development! The project is being realised by Clovers Production under the direction of Hideki Kamiya, who already directed the first part. Fans can look forward to another journey into the magical world of the sun goddess Amaterasu.
The teaser: a magical foretaste
The announcement trailer, which was shown during the Game Awards 2024, picked up on the distinctive art style of the original, which sets itself apart from other games with hand-drawn visuals inspired by Japanese ink painting. The short teaser clip shows Amaterasu in an epic landscape, accompanied by atmospheric background music from a live orchestra. There were no concrete gameplay details, but the trailer already conveyed the artistic and emotional depth that characterises the franchise. The emotional presentation was met with great applause from fans on site.
What is Okami
Okami, first released in 2006 by Clover Studio and Capcom, is considered one of the most artistically sophisticated games. The title combines action-adventure gameplay with a visual design in the style of traditional Japanese painting. Players take on the role of Amaterasu, the sun goddess in the form of a white wolf, and use the ‘Celestial Brush’ to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
The game received widespread acclaim when it was released and still has very good ratings on Metacritic today: Metascore 93.
Still in the early stages
Development is still at an early stage and a release date has not yet been announced. However, the mere announcement of a new Okami title is already creating anticipation among long-time fans and newcomers alike.
