Onimusha: Way of the Sword - Everything you need to know

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is coming to PC on September 4, 2026. Find out here what Capcom’s action game is all about, what system requirements your computer needs to meet, how the three editions differ, and check out the best trailers for the game in our playlist.

What is Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

With Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom is reviving a series that, aside from the Onimusha: Warlords Remaster, had been dormant for many years. Way of the Sword is set in Kyoto during the early Edo period, which is gradually being enveloped by an ominous miasma fog. This fog tears open portals to the underworld, through which demonic creatures called Genma pour into the city of the living.

In terms of gameplay, the new Onimusha is all about fast, timing-based sword fights: If you time your counterattack perfectly, you can use the special technique known in the series as “Issen” (a counterattack) to take down even powerful enemies with a single strike.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword deliberately positions itself as an alternative to the Soulslike genre, even though some Soulslike veterans might disagree with that assessment after their first few play sessions. But instead of grueling stamina management, branching skill trees, and punishing trial-and-error, the game focuses on more direct, classic arcade-style sword-fighting action with an emphasis on parrying and perfect timing. As a result, the combat feels more physical and immediate than in typical Souls-like games, while remaining more accessible—though often no less challenging. Some previews even explicitly described the game as a welcome change of pace from the flood of Souls-like titles in recent years. Other similarities to the Soulslike genre—a dark fantasy atmosphere, tough boss battles, and a certain level of precision required—definitely evoke the genre—just without its over-the-top frustration factor. In short: Take the plunge—come to Kiyomizu-dera Temple!
