Does anyone know if you can switch the gameplay to 3rd person view? Or is it strickly 1st person like the Far Cry series?

There's some moment it's 3rd person when you wield a sword, also in vehicles

Correct, if you switch to your class super skills or if you use a melee weapon/vehicle then you'll also have a third person camera (sometimes when equipping certain items as well). Mainly it's a first person game at heart though.
